Joanna was a new girl in the neighborhood. She was a very bright and obedient child and enjoyed making friends and talking to new people. But there was a catch to her story, she was a special child. Due to a neurological condition her legs were non-functional and she had to use a wheelchair for movement.
Due to this reason, she found it very difficult to make friends as she was unable to engage in playful activities. For her, socialising was also a very hard task as other children used to neglect her and stay away because of her condition. Even her parents struggled a lot to make other children accept her. In her school, the teacher had told everyone to be nice to her and help her if she needed. Though the children used to talk with her and help her, they never felt a friendly connection with Joanna as for them she was different.
One day, when Joanna was sitting at the window and was watching kids playing in the garden, her mother came and saw this. She asked her “Do you want to go to the garden?” Joanna was very happy and excited to hear this and she instantly replied “Yesss!” They went to the garden and as they entered, Joanna started looking at the kids playing and she felt very joyous. Her mother went to talk with the neighbours while Joanna was watching. Suddenly a kid accidentally kicked a ball towards Joanna, she got very scared and tried to dodge it. While dodging the ball, her wheelchair got imbalanced and she fell to the ground. She started crying and calling her mother, struggling to get back in the wheelchair. As soon as her mother saw this, she ran toward Joanna. Diya, a girl who was standing nearby also went to help Joanna. Both Diya and Joanna’s mother came and helped her to get back in the wheelchair. Her mother asked “Oh dear! Are you okay?” and was relieved when Joanna said that she was fine. Her mother saw Diya and thanked her for helping Joanna.
The next day in school, Diya met Joanna and asked her if she was fine. Joanna replied with a yes and thanked Diya for helping her. Diya called her friends and said, “Meet Joanna, she is our new friend”. Everyone greeted Joanna, after which Diya replied “From today onwards, she is one of us”. Joanna was very happy to have new friends and to be one of them.
What did we learn from this story
There are a lot of people who are very different from us due to many reasons. We should always try to accept their differences so that they do not feel neglected or avoided.
