Arya and Allen were both very argumentative people, they liked to question everything that they heard or saw before truly believing in it. It is a very good skill to have, as with this skill we can try to identify wrong information and know whether people are deceiving us.
Aarya was different from Allen in the sense that even if she had a different opinion regarding something, and people did not agree with her due to their own opinion, Aarya respected others and their opinion. Whereas Allen thought that the opinion he had was the only correct one and he tried to impose his opinions on others, rather than listening, let alone respecting others’ views. He even got aggressive and sometimes used a loud and angry voice just to prove his point, when people did not agree with his opinions. Allen had a very strong positive, before making an opinion on any topic he would try to acquire a lot of information regarding it to make his perspective factually strong.
Both Aarya and Allen loved to participate in debate competitions, so just like every year, they both participated in the annual debate competition held in their school. They participated with their classmates in groups of five, who had to debate against each other until two groups remained which would compete with each other to ultimately decide which team wins. This time it happened that Aarya and Allen came face to face as they had chosen the same debate topic. The debate started and members from both teams started putting forward their points. Allen came and so confidently stated his points that the audience started cheering and clapping. He had a strong hold in the debate and was handling the other team very well until Aarya came and countered him.
Aarya’s words were so clear and on the point that even she got a very good reaction from the audience. They both continued countering each other, but it was evident that Aarya was gaining an upper hand. Seeing this, his habit of aggression kicked in for Allen. He started raising his voice when speaking, and after countless counters from the other team, his aggression fully burst out. He started to shout out his opinions, whereas Aarya stayed calm and controlled.
The debate ended and it was judging time, the judges stated that while debating, it is important to have emotional control which Allen lacked. As a result of this, Aarya’s team was declared the winner. After this incident, Allen realized his mistake and tried to get better. He slowly gained control of his aggression, which helped him win various debates in the future.
What we learned
Two things are very important to remember when debating, to respect the opinions that others have, and to control our emotions when putting out our opinions.
