Assertiveness- saying no.
It is always good and fulfilling to help someone and saying yes to people that makes them happy and also helps us build social relations and friendships but is it always good to say yes?
Let us look at these two situations before answering this question.
SITUATION 1
Romila was stressed as she was unable to complete her homework and was struggling to complete it an hour before her class just when her friend Rony called her and asked for her help in completing her project. Romila could not say no so she helped her and had to face punishment later in the class for not completing her homework.
SITUATION 2
Priya had an exam the next day. She was studying just when her friend Molly called her and invited to play with them . Priya denied but Molly insisted to come at least for an hour but Priya was firm on her decision on not going to play. She politely explained to Molly that she had an exam tomorrow and she hasn’t completed her syllabus yet so today won’t be possible.
Looking at these two situations, who do you think was right?
What Priya did is known as being assertive. Being assertive helps you boost your confidence and self-esteem. It also strengthens our decision-making skills thus enabling us to know what is wrong and what is right.
