Neel had a habit of doing things himself. He tried to do everything by himself and would not ask anyone to help him. He would squeeze the ketchup bottle tightly, but would not ask his parents to help if the ketchup did not come out. He would try to solve a problem for hours, but would not ask the teacher or his friends for help.
One day in school, an art and craft session was conducted. A craft teacher had come to teach the children. The teacher displayed various crafts designs to the children and then asked them to make one of the designs. After observing the teacher making the design carefully, the children started making their favourite designs. The teacher mentioned that if the children got stuck somewhere or forget the process, they could ask her for guidance. While all the students were making their designs and asking the teacher for help whenever needed, Neel was sitting in a corner clueless as to what to do next. Instead of asking the teacher, he was just trying to think what the next step was. The time ended and the craft teacher asked everyone to come up and show their designs. Everyone had completed their designs, except for Neel. The craft teacher saw this and asked him “Why is your project incomplete?” Neel said that he forgot the steps. The teacher then asked him, “Then why didn’t you come to me for help?” Neel got silent and lowered his head.
Seeing this, Neel’s class teacher came and asked him “Neel, why didn’t you ask ma’am to help you? She would have guided you through the steps.”
“I have seen that even in class you don’t ask for help even when you need it, why is that?” his teacher added. Neel replied, “I get fearful to ask for help from the teachers, I get the feeling that they will ridicule me. I don’t ask my friends for help because I think they would judge me and think that I am dependent on them.” Hearing this, his teacher came to Neel and humbly replied, “No Neel, you should not think like that. We all teachers are here for the purpose of helping the students, you can always ask us for help. And if you ask your friends for help, they will never think that you are dependent. If you don’t ask for help then you might get in trouble, so you should always ask for help when in need”. Neel understood what his teacher said and promised to ask for help without any hesitation.
What do we learn
No one will judge you, ridicule you, or feel like you are dependent on them, if you ask them for genuine help. Asking for help when needed can save you from getting into trouble.
